Joomla is a free and open source content management system (CMS) for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets and a model–view–controller (MVC) Web application framework that can also be used independently.

Joomla is written in PHP, uses object-oriented programming (OOP) techniques and software design patterns, stores data in a MySQL database, and includes features such as RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, search, and support for language internationalization.

Between March 2007 and April 2012  there have been more than 30 million downloads. Joomla now averages around 1 million downloads every month.

WordPress is an open source blogging tool and publishing platform powered by PHP and MySQL.

It is often customized into a content management system (CMS). It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. Wordpress powers 22% of all new websitesand is currently the most popular CMS in use on the Internet. It was first released on May 27, 2003.

Since January 2012, version 3.3 has been downloaded over 18.5 million times.
